The Letter
The letter from Mr Fenwick arrived at the Building Committee the following week.
I wasn't there, of course. But Gerald Pike told me afterwards exactly what happened. Felicity opened it at the start of the meeting. She read it once. Then she read it again. Then she screamed.
“One point five MILLION! From an anonymous donor! We're there! We're practically there!”
The committee went wild. Gerald said one of them knocked over the teapot.
By that evening, the whole village knew. By Sunday, the parish newsletter had a headline on the front page.
CHAIRWOMAN LANDS £1.5 MILLION MYSTERY GIFT.
Inside, there was a photo of Felicity holding up the letter, and a quote.
“I've been working my London connections very hard for months,” said Mrs Harrington. “I'm not allowed to say who the donor is. But I'm thrilled my efforts have paid off.”
I read it at my kitchen table, with a cup of tea.
Then I cut it out and put it in a drawer.
Arthur always said you should keep a record of things. In case you need it later.
