The Pitch They Sabotaged

Monday

On Monday morning, Graham called the whole agency into the big meeting room on the top floor. Eighty people.

There was champagne for the Hartley's win. And a cake shaped like a Digestive, which made me smile in spite of everything.

Graham stood at the front.

“First,” he said, “a huge congratulations to everyone involved in Hartley's. Especially Becca. An extraordinary pitch.”

Everyone clapped. I smiled and looked at the floor.

“Second,” said Graham, “I'm delighted to announce our new Creative Director.”

He turned towards Olivia, who was standing at the front in a cream jacket, smiling modestly.

“Olivia has shown great leadership,” said Graham. “Particularly last week, when she had the foresight to bring a backup to the Hartley's pitch. Olivia, would you like to say a few words?”

Olivia stepped forward.

“Thank you, Graham,” she said. “I'm so honoured. And I'd just like to say, Becca did a wonderful job on Thursday. Under the circumstances.”

She gave me a sweet, sad smile.

“I suppose it's a lesson for all of us,” she said. “Always back up your files.”

A few people laughed.

At the back of the room, the door opened.

Kevin Doyle walked in, holding a thin stack of paper.
