Item Two
Item two was Vanessa.
She sat very straight, trying to look calm. “I'd like to say that I have six years' experience in marketing and—”
“You were hired two years ago,” I said. “As a marketing assistant. You were made director eight months ago. The same month the company started paying the rent on your flat in Chelsea.”
The whole room turned to stare at her.
“That was a housing allowance. Daniel said—”
“There's no housing allowance at Hart Interiors,” Arthur Bell said quietly. “I'd know. I wrote the policies.”
Marcus placed another folder on the table. Bank statements. A flat lease. Hotel bills from Paris and Lisbon. A receipt for a diamond bracelet from Bond Street.
All paid with the company card. All signed off by Daniel.
“Two hundred and forty thousand pounds in eight months,” Marcus said. “Spent on Miss Cole.”
Vanessa turned to Daniel. “You said it was your money. You said you owned everything.” Daniel didn't answer her. He was staring at the bracelet receipt as if it might bite him.
“I vote no on item two,” I said. “And I'd like to add an item of my own.”
