The Reunion

Most Likely

There's a framed photo in the lobby of every one of the twenty-two Sullivan Auto garages. It's not of me with an award. It's not of a fancy car.

It's a page from the Oak Ridge High yearbook, class of 2016.

A sixteen-year-old kid in a stained T-shirt, with oil on his face. Underneath, the words that made a whole school laugh at him.

NICK SULLIVAN – MOST LIKELY TO CHANGE YOUR OIL.

And under that, in a teacher's neat handwriting:

And then he changed everything else.

And under that, forty signatures. Jenny. Owen. Danny. Mr. Hanley. And right at the bottom, a little shaky, one more.

Chad Whitmore.

Customers ask about it all the time. I tell them the story. Not to make anybody look bad. Just so they know.

If you're the kid with oil on your hands, and people are laughing, and you can't afford the prom ticket, keep going. Keep learning. Keep telling the truth.

Your hands can fix things.

And one day, you'll walk into a room full of the people who laughed at you.

You won't need to say anything at all.

You'll just need to be exactly who you've always been.
