The Intern Nobody Noticed

The Name Rule

When I started full time at Lakeshore, a few things had changed.

Linda Prescott had made a new rule. Every report presented to senior managers or the board had to list every person who'd worked on it, on the front page. Every single one. Interns included.

People at head office called it the Abby Rule. I asked them to stop. They didn't.

The intern program changed too. Every intern now got a real project. Every intern presented their own work at the end of the summer. Directly to the leadership team. Kayla got a full-time job in the marketing team. On her first day, she put a sign on her desk that said Ohio State and Proud.

Jason from Princeton sent me a message after the board meeting.

I was wrong about “that's how it works,” he wrote. Sorry. It's not how it should work.

As for Trevor, I heard he got a job at a smaller company in Milwaukee. I hope he's doing well. I really do.

I hope he reads the footnotes now.
