At 9:47 on a Tuesday night, my sister sent a screenshot to the wrong group chat.

I was sitting on my sofa bed, eating cereal for dinner, when my phone buzzed. The family chat. Donnelly Family. Me, my sister Lauren, my brother Kyle, his wife Amber and our mom. It was a screenshot of a different chat. One I'd never seen before. At the top, it said Donnelly HQ. There were three people in it.

Lauren. Kyle. Amber.

Not me. Not Mom.

Kyle: Have you seen Claire's apartment?? It's literally the size of Mom's closet lmao. 41, divorced, living in a shoebox.

Lauren: She's only driving Mom to church every Sunday to get the house. So obvious. Amber: She can have the china 😂

Kyle: Lol she can have the china. We get the house.

I stared at it.

Thirty seconds later, it disappeared.

Lauren deleted a message.

Then, a minute after that:

Lauren: Oops wrong chat! Ignore! Love you guys! ❤️

Mom replied with a thumbs up. She didn't see it. She went to bed at nine.

I sat on my sofa bed, holding my bowl of cereal, in my apartment the size of Mom's closet.

I didn't eat any more that night.
